Amsterdam is alive with street art; it embraces everyone and pushes the boundaries of imagination and social conscience. The part that captured most of my imagination and time is the area known as Art City – Kunststad NDSM.
Amsterdam Noord, or North Amsterdam lies directly across the IJ River from Amsterdam-Centrum and is easily accessible via a free ferry from Amsterdam Central Station. The Big attractions are the Straad Street Art Museum (STRAAT Museum of street art and graffiti | NDSM | STREET Museum) and simply walking around the area. So much of the site is dedicated to street art, come for a walk with me.
The site transformed from an industrial shipbuilding district into a creative sanctuary with abundant space, supportive policies, and affordable artist studios. The area’s abandoned warehouses, empty walls, and former industrial buildings provide massive canvases that attract artists seeking creative freedom. This unique and iconic 3-star hotel offers rooms on board of a boat on the IJ on the NDSM wharf. The NDSM wharf is a former shipyard hosting activities such as festivals, musical events, art, flea markets, restaurants, bars and new architecture. You can stay next to the action. And if your up to it, you can rent this room in a crane for only 800 Euros per night. Yup.Walking past the outdoor installations, a bit of everything!More of the classicsInside the huge former ship building warehouses you will find a large number of individual studios. Watch out for the spiders!Don’t forget to wave good-by as you board the free ferry to get back to Amsterdam proper!
