As artists, we often find ourselves at the intersection of inspiration and creation, constantly seeking that elusive spark that ignites our imaginations and drives our artistic endeavors. Yet, amidst this quest, we are left pondering: where does creativity truly originate?
Recently, I completed a series of watercolor painting classes, where I was guided through various techniques and compositions. However, upon the conclusion of these classes, I found myself faced with a blank canvas and the daunting task of conjuring up my own scenes to paint. It was a moment of both liberation, uncertainty, and reality – no longer was there someone dictating what I should paint; instead, I had to rely solely on my personal wellspring of creativity.
In contemplating this process, I realized that while artists often draw inspiration from external sources – be it the works of other artists, music, poetry, or the world around them – the essence of creativity itself resides within us.
Creativity is not merely about replicating or mimicking what already exists, but rather, it is about the unique fusion of ideas, experiences, and perspectives that each individual brings to the table. It is the ability to see the world through a kaleidoscope of possibilities, to reimagine the ordinary into the extraordinary, and to breathe life into the intangible. I can make you see things my way, but you might politly disagree.
But where does this well of creativity originate? Some may attribute it to divine intervention or a stroke of luck, while others may argue that it stems from years of practice and honing one’s craft. While these factors certainly play a role, I believe that creativity is a deeply personal and introspective journey, shaped by our individual passions, fears, desires, and life experiences.
For me, creativity often emerges from moments of introspection and vulnerability – when I allow myself to be fully present and open to the myriad of emotions and sensations coursing through me (I don’t have to agree with what is being presented, just listen). It is during these moments of stillness that I find myself connecting with the essence of who I am, and from this place of authenticity, creativity naturally flows. I have to keep learning and experiencing new things, I can’t sit at home and just paint. I need an experience or emotion or something to move me to create my picture.
Moreover, creativity thrives in environments that foster experimentation, curiosity, and a willingness to embrace failure. It is through trial and error; through pushing the boundaries of our comfort zones, that we uncover new possibilities and push the limits of our artistic expression.
So, as I embark on this journey of self-discovery and artistic exploration, I am reminded that creativity is not a destination to be reached, but rather, an evolution of self-expression and discovery. While the path ahead may be uncertain, I take solace in the knowledge that within each of us lies an infinite reservoir of creativity waiting to be unleashed.
Every experience that I partake in is an opportunity to absorb an environment, in turn, It kindles my creativity until I am finally able to get home and splash it on my canvas. I have found my personal answer to my question; take part in the world around me, find what I am looking for, and then bring it home to the drawing table.
Can’t move forward waiting to be inspired, I have to chase it!
