Back again! We seem to do our best traveling at this time of year, so I’m not home as much these days. Still, I’ve learned something new that I’d like to share for anyone who enjoys a creative experiment or two.
My picture this week is my first real attempt at the wet-on-wet technique. I’m not sure if I like it yet — there are some interesting lines and tones, but I had to draw the barbed wire in with an ink pen. I think I rushed it a little and didn’t give the paper enough time to dry before adding more detail. As a result, the finer touches melted together. I tried to rescue a few areas with a large sketching pencil, but the real lesson here is patience — letting each layer dry completely before moving on.
Oh well, lesson learned! Now that I’ve shared the painting, I came across another fun idea: add a touch of writing to go with the art — maybe a quick limerick, a haiku, or just a few creative lines.
Here’s mine to accompany my painting of three fence posts and barbed wire overlooking a prairie field:
A fence post was standing
Like a sentry left commanding
Keeping watch over his field
Once upon a time the field was a forest
And the fence post, well he was a tree.
My water colours will never hang in a gallery or on a family member’s wall, but with my poetic bits as signatures on the backs of my paintings, I hope they’ll one day amuse a curious future enthusiast.
